Organic and conventional farming of food crops is our core business.
KTG Agrar SE cultivates over 46.000 hectares of farmland for organic and conventional farming of food crops.
The use of intercrops ideally complements the cultivation of food crops.
The constantly growing demand for energy contrasts with the inevitable depletion of fossil energy sources and the climate change. This means that the future clearly belongs to renewable energies. In response to this trend, the German government has established a clear legal framework in the form of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).
Within the context of our integrated business model, we have operated biogas plants since 2006. The production of clean energy at 21 different sites ideally complements the cultivation of food crops. Biogas is produced through the fermentation of biomass. All feedstock materials required for this process are grown on our own fields. In addition to these purpose-grown renewable resources, we also use grass and straw as feed materials, thereby turning agricultural residues into clean energy.
In addition, we increasingly rely on intercrops; millet or special grasses are sown after the grain harvest in the summer and harvested in November. The fermentation residues obtained from the production of biogas still contain 98% of the nutrients. We return them to the fields to give the soil back the energy we have taken from it, thereby closing the natural cycle. The result: sustainable production of food and clean energy.
Depending on the site, the biogas is used to operate a co-generation unit that produces electricity and heat or upgraded to natural gas standards and directly fed into the public gas grid. This way, we cover the energy requirements of some 500.000 people – which is more or less equivalent to the population of the city of Frankfurt – and help protect the environment. The heat produced in the co-generation units is either used to heat our administrative buildings and dry the grain or supplied to nearby homes and public facilities at favourable rates.
